Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is musical based on a 1954 film of the same name and the short story The Sobbin’ Women by Stephen Vincent Benét, who was inspired by the ancient Roman legend about the abduction of the Sabine women. It originally opened on Broadway in 1982.

The musical’s story revolves around Adam, the eldest of seven brothers who live on a ranch in a remote mountain location in Oregon. One day, he goes to town to seek a woman he can marry. There, he meets Milly, who works as a waitress in a restaurant. Embarking on a whirlwind romance, the two quickly get married and return to Adam’s backwoods home.

Milly soon discovers that Adam has six brothers, all of whom are uncouth and inconsiderate. Milly decides to reform the brothers, who are all anxious to also get married themselves. She takes them to a barn-raising, where they meet six girls they really like. The brothers start courting the girls, but trouble occurs when it is revealed that each of them have other suitors, who all get jealous over the boys’ advances.

Upon returning home, Adam reads about the ancient Roman tale concerning the Sabine women. Inspired by what he read, he quickly devises a plan in which the brothers will abduct the girls so that they can bring them to their mountain home.
