Oliver! Is an English musical based on the 1838 novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. It features the music and lyrics of Lionel Bart. Premiering in London’s West End in 1960, the musical had highly successful runs both in the United Kingdom and in the United States. In 1968, a film adaptation of the musical was released by Columbia Pictures. This motion picture eventually won 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Oliver! introduces Oliver Twist as a 9-year-old orphan who runs away from a workhouse orphanage. He manages to make his way to London, where he falls in with a group of juvenile pickpockets led by the wily Artful Dodger. The young ones operate under the direction of the criminal Fagin, who keeps all the money the group manages to make for himself.

One of Fagin’s associates is the terrifying Bill Sikes, whose girlfriend is one of the gang’s older female members, Nancy—a person Oliver comes to consider as a real friend. Meanwhile, Oliver’s intended mark, the wealthy Mr. Brownlow, takes pity on the boy and offers him a home. Unbeknownst to Oliver, Mr. Brownlow holds the key to unlocking his true heritage. However, Fagin and Bill hatch a plan to kidnap the boy to prevent him from reporting their criminal activities.
