Though Disney’s 1998 film Mulan is popularly known throughout the world, the tale’s origins can be traced back centuries to ancient China. Set during the Han dynasty, The Ballad of Mulan tells the tale about a girl who proudly took the place of her old father and younger brother to war. After 12 years of battle, Mulan and her comrades return and were rewarded, and it was only then that the men, who have been fighting along side her for more than a decade, realized that she was a woman.

Building on this tale, Disney’s version of Mulan became so popular that it has grossed around $304.4 million in the box office. After its success in the cinema, the Mulan franchise further branched out to other forms of media and merchandise, a universe that now includes a TV series and popular video games.
