Based on a novel by the American author C.Y. Lee, the song- and dance-filled musical Flower Drum Song is the eighth work of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who composed the music and wrote the lyrics for the title, respectively. When it opened on Broadway in 1958, it was generally received positively by the critics, and it even won a Tony Award that same year.

Set in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the 1950s, Flower Drum Song’s central theme is the generational gap between the Chinese immigrants from China and the highly Americanized Chinese who grew up in the New World.

The story tells of a naïve and traditional girl, Mei-Li, who arrives in the United States after escaping communist China. She is to be the wife of a wealthy nightclub owner, Sammy Fong, in an arranged marriage. However, her fiancé is already in love with another woman, Linda Low, who is a stripper at the club. Sammy offers to sign the contract over to the Wang family, whose patriarch, Master Wang, is a very traditional man.

Meanwhile, Master Wang’s son, Ta, hurries over to a blind date, which turns out to be Linda Low herself. Highly impulsive, Ta asks Linda to marry him. Because Linda has already gotten impatient with her 5-year relationship with Sammy, she decides to go forward with the union. Confusion ensues when Sammy learns of the planned matrimony and plots to reveal Linda’s true identity before the Wangs.

Over the course of the musical, the struggles of these Chinese Americans are exposed as they try to grapple their identities and attempt to find the balance between clinging to the traditional values of their native land and embracing those of their adopted homeland.
